FITPERÚ
COMMUNICATION

Last March, when the Organizing Committee of what was to become the International Tourism Fair in Peru, FITPERU 2007, met for the first time, the group came to the decision that, in order for this event to work correctly and fulfill all of its objectives, its success depended on the involvement of and participation of all living forces in the city, region and the country, both private and public.

In this same meeting, which was convoked by the La Libertad Regional Tourism Chamber (CARETUR), the La Libertad Regional Government, the Trujillo City and Provincial Government as well as Promperu all made a formal commitment to support the event.

The La Libertad Chamber of Commerce and Production and the Northern Tourism Circuit (CTN) also demonstrated their support, along with the  Ministry of Foreign Commerce and Tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Relations, the National Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR) as well as diverse guilds that belong to these organizations.

An extensive mix of institutions who share one objective: construct a new base to develop tourism in Northern Peru and in the Amazon, opening a new showcase for people who are not from the country or the zone.

After arduous promotional work that was carried out by HoritzoGrup in different markets – recalling the news from China, the Dominican Republic, Spain, Cuba, and lastly Ecuador – a good-sized international business program was put together that included buyers, academic, artistic and folk activities, accreditation of specialized international press, along with stands that provide excellent offers from the tourism, hotel, air and land transportation, crafts and related sectors from different countries.

However, over the past few weeks, the three aforementioned entities did not come through with the economic support that was announced and agreed upon.  This money was going to be used to cover transportation and complementary expenses that were required to concrete the presence of international buyers, invited speakers and the international press, who,  as part of the business rounds with the Peruvian offer, would have been responsible for covering the fair as well as producing reports about the trips and programmed visits to various tourism attractions in Peru, especially in Trujillo and La Libertad.

In the same way, the La Libertad guild sector that encompasses diverse tourism-related activities, proved to be divided and involved in absurd actions to call attention to themselves. This became an obstacle that impeded the FITPERU organizing committee from work ing and the normal development of participation in the fair.

Here in Trujillo, in La Libertad, that famous phrase UNION MAKES STRENGTH has become: SEPARATE, DON’T WORK, LET’S STOP THE FAIR SO THAT WE DON’T HAVE TOURISM.

Up until this moment, in financial terms, the only investment that was made was that of HoritzoGrup, who has taken on a total of $59,000 (fifty-nine thousand dollars).  This money has been invested in management, promotion and promotional material over the course of these eight months.

Therefore, ours is the only organization that has taken a risk for this event in a dedicated and serious way, holding onto the vision of supporting the zone’s tourism future, just as it did in Ecuador six years ago.

Therefore, after exhausting all of the possible efforts, I unfortunately have to announce the decision to not continue any further on and suspend FITPERU in the city of Trujillo.

To conclude, I wish to express my absolute desconcierto to the municipal and regional authorities at having lost the great opportunity to develop this event that has become an evident economical axis for all of its residents.  People of all  social statuses who are involved in various activities from all the cities, regions and the entire country that have taken risks for tourism could have benefited from this event.  The lack of support has been a big mistake, and only time will show that I am correct.

I wish to thank, in a special way, all those people, entities and businesses that have unconditionally supported this attempt, which has just remained as a project.  I recognize the press that has cooperated, from the beginning, transmitting the information about all the steps that were taken, day by day, month by month.  You must be the worst critics -- with a constructivist vision – of the actions and omissions committed by your representatives today in the public sector.
